Could it be unavoidable?

Our generation is full of stuff that people from back in the day could of never imagined having. Back then, it was the old school landlines to communicate via phone. Now we have smart phones, video conferencing, etc. Back then, people would purchase a news paper to know whats going on with the world, and now there are several websites to just look up news such as CNN. For how technology has advanced, we might are naturally addicted to using the internet.

Many companies around the world are connected by the use of the internet. Video conferencing has to be a big part of it. Instead of having to pay for a plane ticket to go to a meeting in China with other executives, you can just set up a video conference from where you are with the use of a computer and a webcam. Most of the other communication is via email. Yeah, you could just text another executive, however, to some, its just not professional.

How do you pay your bills? If you didn't say via internet, your probably lying. What about checking your bank statements other than the statements you receive in the mailbox? You are using the internet. What about certain shopping? I personally look for deals online all the time and get my items delivered to my door.

The biggest point here is what would we be without the internet? We are, in a way, uncontrollably addicted to the internet because it remains in existence, unless if we actually have a zombie apocalypse one of these days when we would have to take other matters into our own hands to stay alive. Ultimately, it is ok if you are addicted to the internet. There is no escape at this point. Technology will continue to advance and were just going to want more of it because it's cool.

  1. i realize more and more that Internet is part of our lives. i don't consider internet as an addiction it's more like a survival for society. as it is mentioned in the post, we almost do everything through internet. We pay our bill, shopping... thanks to the internet.
I think technology will get better and better and people will get used, in the future we won't be talking about internet addiction because it will be the new normal.

  2. There is a lot of truth in what you say. I think the challenge will be finding ways to control Internet use at work, home and school so that we don't lose that human touch that we all need to survive.

  3. I agree with what you say everything is true. Everything is becoming Internet based and I think that it causes people to loose human interaction. I know that with smartphones now people spend a greater amount of time on the Internet. I know personally since I got a smartphone my Internet addiction has probably tripled. So I definitely agree with your last point about the larger technology increases the more addicted we become.

  4. Agreed. I have been trying to put myself out there instead of being so reliant to my smartphone to meet people, and now and days, people are just so out of touch of the communicating part with eachother. its ridiculous. Sometimes, in some ways, I kind of would be happy if we were to have the good old days without having to use the internet just so people would just get off their lazy asses and have a life and to keep in touch of how to interact with other human beings for crying out loud. hahaha Thats part of the reason I am not a fan at all of online dating. Its not too pretty if you think about it.

  5. You all make great points! I think that internet addiction may not be avoidable, if not now then certainly in the next couple of years. The fact that now with 4G cell phones you can find the answer to anything within seconds, is just the start. There are plenty of times in the day when i get online to find the answer to one thing, and an hour later I couldn't tell you how I got to the page I'm currently on. It's just like when you call your mom to see if she put a letter in the mail, and 3 hours later you know about the dog's entire trip to the hospital to get the toy car it ate out of his stomach, how your great aunt you don't even know is doing, and that your father is lazy and needs to get his butt up from the couch. If you continue to find topics you are interested in, you may just never stop!

  6. I completely agree with this blog! I think "addiction" is avoidable, but I think the dependability that people today have on the internet is unavoidable. The internet is the easiest, most convenient way to do just about anything. You have access to the internet anyday and time of day and almost everything is available online. I know that I do all my banking and billpay online. I do alot of shopping online. I do my social networking online. I do my research and homework online. You can search for a job and apply online. I do my job online. I think that the internet is a great tool and it would be unwise for people to not use this amazing technology but it does create a dependability and oftentimes that leads to an addiction.

  7. One thing that I could say that I'm addicted to from online use is gaming. If Call Of Duty online play counts, which I think it is, I'm very addicted. haha However, I do limit my time use so I don't go a whole day in front of a TV. Another use would be the use of online work from professors like moodle for classes, connect plus, and pearson learning solutions. I kind of miss the old fashion hard copy work because I lose track of the passwords and such hahaha

  8. It does seen that the Internet is becoming an integral part of our lives to the point that the only way to avoid it is to not own a computer. Everything from homework, book reading, and bill paying is shifting to the online atmosphere, adding that on to the social media sites, Internet dependence may be unavoidable. I think the world has become dependent on the Internet for many activities.

  9. Hopefully it doesn't completely mess up our entire social life, and social skills. It is hard enough now to find a woman or 2 that have troubles interacting with other people, and then they say that I am socially awkward. lol
